A police dog, also known as K-9 or K9 (a homophone of canine), is a dog specifically trained to assist members of law enforcement, and have been used in law enforcement since the Middle Ages.
Dogs entering the K9 corps are matched with a handler and go through an intensive training program. Police Departments require a dog to first pass basic obedience training. The dogs must be able to respond to and obey the commands of their handler without hesitation for proper control. Patrol dogs are trained in obedience, protection, and searches, in addition to tracking and criminal apprehension. These dogs are taught to use their instincts on instruction and in a supervised manner.
K9 dogs are continuously trained and tested to ensure they stay at the top of their game. Used as a means of law enforcement widely across the United States, Police K9s usually serve on the force for 6 to 9 years.
The North Tonawanda Police Canine (K9) Unit currently consists of one Police Service Dog named Stella, and her handler, Officer Jeff Kam. Stella is sister to North Tonawanda's previous K9, Hammer who worked with retired Officer Tim Sylvester. Chosen for physical ability, strength and intelligence, this Czech-bred shepherd is certified in narcotics and patrol along with tracking.
In addition to assisting patrols and special units such as SWAT and Drug Task Force, Officer Kam and K9 Stella often perform K9 demonstrations where community members get the opportunity to engage with North Tonawanda's own Paw Patrol.
